Introducing Rarebird: Coffee That Support Mental Wellness Some of you are probably reading this post over a cup of coffee (fun facts: 60% of us drink coffee daily and it's one of the top three most consumed beverages in the U.S.). And like many of you, my relationship with coffee is a bit of a love-hate one. It kick-started my mornings in college, powered me through late-night experiments in grad school, and was the foundation of my morning routine throughout adulthood. But, if I skip a day I had better prepare for headaches. And if I drink too much, then it’s time to say hello to stress and poor sleep quality. The oscillation between tired and wired can be exhausting. While I can easily blame caffeine for these woes, that wouldn’t be giving it due credit. After all, caffeine has pulled its fair share of molecular weight historically. It played a role sparking the Enlightenment and stimulated the minds that would pull Europe out of the Dark Ages. The real issue is that life has changed, but coffee has remained the same. One of the unfortunate side effects of caffeine is that it can amplify feelings of stress and anxiety. In short, caffeine is increasingly incompatible with lives that are becoming evermore fast-paced, technology driven, and stressful.  In 2020, I founded Rarebird – then known as Revel Technologies – to see if there was a way to keep what we all love about coffee, the ritual and romance, while shedding some of its baggage. What I didn’t realize was the answer was inside us this whole time. Every time we consume caffeine, enzymes in our liver convert it into an active metabolite called paraxanthine (or Px for short). Just like caffeine, Px wakes you up and increases alertness, but without many of caffeine’s negative side effects. Px is also metabolized faster than caffeine, so less remains in your body when you’re ready to go to bed. Today, we’re excited to be sharing Px coffee with the world! Px coffee is coffee. It just contains Px instead of caffeine. You brew it just like a traditional coffee, and the aroma and taste are exactly what you’d expect from a high-quality, specialty brew. You can find Px coffee available today through our Kickstarter campaign (found here https://rarebird.la/RB1) where we are offering the opportunity to experience product from our first commercial production runs. Lastly, I want to give a special shout out to the R&D team (Mario Ouellet, Oliver Kilian, Cam Nghiem) for working tirelessly to develop the backend biotech that made Rarebird possible. I look forward to sharing with you more about Rarebird’s journey in the coming months! -Jeffrey #biotechnology, #launch, #foodandbeverage, #mentalhealth
